Clearly we need to say more than that, but it is true! It’s such a great variety, with fresh citrus flavours and is a fabulous wine to match with food (we’ll cover that later.)
And we’re excited to let you know that the 2022 vintage is now available for you to pop into your wine rack/cellar.
Winemakers’ Comments – Jules Ashmead & Brock Harrison
With decent winter rains following on from the 2021 vintage, our Riesling started the season in good shape, primed for a good growing season. Cooler conditions carried on through the ripening period and despite the ever-present threat of rain with the ‘La Nina’ weather pattern, this didn’t affect our picking time in the end.
Cooler vintage conditions also allowed us to hold on to a great fresh acidity whilst achieving lovely fruit flavour to balance.
There is no doubt that 2022 will be remembered as a great year for Riesling. We have kept our expression of 2022 as pure as possible, with as little intervention as we could. The result is a pristine example of Eden Valley Riesling. We are sure this wine will live a long time.
They just go together. There are so many styles of Riesling from across the world that you can match a Riesling with just about any cuisine.
Because our Eden Valley Riesling is a dry style, with citrus notes and acidity and a hint of minerality, it is a great match for foods to which you would add a squeeze of lemon or lime. The most obvious choice is seafood. Think oysters natural with lemon and lime wedges, fillets of King George Whiting that the family has just caught on the Yorke Peninsula and cooked on the bbq or salt and pepper squid.
It’s also great with dishes that feature Asian flavours – I squeeze lemon or lime onto my pad thai – and the citrus notes and acidity of our Eden Valley Riesling continue the theme.
Fried rice and dumplings are another great match. Next time you’re in the Barossa check out MAnMA Barossa Kitchen. Mikiko makes gyoza and sells them at the Farmers Market and other outlets, so we keep them in the freezer at home for mid-week meals!
Or pair with richer dishes that you feel need a bit of acidity to balance the richness, like sauteed mushrooms, or maybe a sneaky beef schnitzel and chips (the acid helps cut through the fat). The below dish was paired with our Riesling at the dinner to celebrate our Cellar Door opening in 2017 – ham and parsley terrine with pickles and sourdough croute.
But most of all, don’t be afraid to experiment with your food and wine pairing – whilst people might tell you there are ‘rules’ we each have our own preferences and everyone’s palate is different.
