2016 Ode to Lorraine
Exceptional SitesBack to All
A Cabernet/Shiraz/Merlot blend was added to our portfolio from the 1992 vintage. It was a belief that through blending only the best parcels of fruit from the Elderton vineyard, a truly wondrous and complete wine could be made that showed the highlights of the three grape varieties. The decision was made from the 2002 vintage onwards for it to be renamed (from CSM) in honour of the co founder of Elderton, Lorraine Ashmead. The winemaking team at Elderton believe this is truly the hidden gem in the Elderton portfolio of premium reds.
|Variety||62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Shiraz, 4% Merlot|
|Vine Age||32 - 102 years|
|Soil||Deep alluvial silt over red and brown earths and limestone|
|Maturation||A selection of French hogsheads and puncheons|
95 Points - Halliday
Sophisticated winemaking weaves the three varieties into a medium-bodied palate perfectly framed by oak and fine, ripe tannins. On an equilibrium right now, which it will, of course, hold for years to come.

#3 of 52 - 2016 Cabernet blends from South Australia
Deepish red colour with good purple tints, and a bouquet of cassis and oak; smoky, toasty barrel inflexions are evident amid a tangle of peat and sousbois. It has a deliciously sweet-cassis flavoured middle, cabernet-driven, with a lot of elegance and promising to age well. A little cellaring will bring rewards. It's fresh and young and should build complexity with time. A delicious blend, benchmark for the style.
