2017 Western Ridge Shiraz
**SPECIAL RELEASE** only available direct from the winery and Cellar Door!
We are excited to bring you the second Special Release of the Western Ridge Shiraz. Extremely popular in its first release from the 2014 vintage, we are equally proud of this wine and expect the 1147 bottles produced to be snapped up quickly.
Giving significance to the place that the wine comes from is integral to the future of the Barossa and, of course, Elderton. The hamlet of Greenock sits on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley, the inspiration for the wine’s name. Our vineyard, located in Greenock in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa’s elite winemakers.
This is a Special Release from the 2017 vintage, including fruit from the prestigious 1915 block on our Greenock vineyard. Due to the orientation of this block, the fruit ripened differently during vintage 2017, and as such we had two parcels of fruit to ferment. One of these is being aged to become the 2017 Fifteen Shiraz. The other was blended with a small parcel of great old vine Shiraz from next to 1915 block, to bring you the 2017 Western Ridge Shiraz.
These two Shiraz blocks sit in the lower sandy reaches of the vineyard and gives small quantities of small berries from small bunches to produce an intensely flavoured Shiraz. Aged in some superb new French and American oak over two winters, we think this is a wine that is destined for drinking greatness, appropriate to enjoy young, or cellar superbly for the next couple of decades.
This wine will not been released to the public – only available direct from the winery and Cellar Door!
The first Western Ridge Shiraz was released from the 2014 vintage, with the fruit sourced exclusively from the 1915 block when the winemaking team decided the wine wasn’t quite of the intensity required to be classified as the Elderton Fifteen Shiraz.

...the 2017 Western Ridge Shiraz features flamboyant, oaky aromas of vanilla, patisserie and baking spices, but there's also plenty of raspberry and mulberry fruit. It's a bit firmer and more structured than the estate Shiraz, with more red fruit, but it still finishes with attractively soft, dusty tannins and terrific length.
