This is the fourth release of Western Ridge. Giving significance to the place that the wine comes from is integral to the future of the Barossa and, of course, Elderton. The hamlet of Greenock sits on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley. We thought it was a nice name to give to our ‘reserve’ Grenache blend – without mentioning the concept of ‘reserve’ which often struggles for meaning in a world full of marketers.

Our vineyard, located in Greenock in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa’s elite winemakers. Estate grown on the old Helbig vineyard; Grenache planted in 1969 and Carignan in 1915.

Winemakers Comments

The two varieties were handpicked and placed into the crusher simultaneously. Fermentation in open top concrete fermenters at relatively cool temperatures to ensure the freshness of the fruit character was preserved, with intention that the wine be luscious and textural, yet be as far from the blockbuster concept as possible.

Ray Jordan, West Weekend 15-16 April 2017 95 POINTS

This vineyard is located at Greenock within the greater Barossa Valley. Combines the deep intensity of the Barossa with a high degree of elegance and style. Grainy tannins and fine-grained oak with a sort of gravelly, loamy fruit character. More in the high-end aromatics, with a delightful fragrance. A very pretty wine where the use of all old French puncheons over 15 months has not overplayed the oak contribution. Excellent. 95/100 (Best drinking: Now to 2025)

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front 2.3.17 93 POINTS

In 2010 Elderton acquired a new wine paddock in the famed Greenock sub-region. It was 60 acres in size, with vines dating back to 1915. That’s not a bad asset to tuck into your back pocket, if you don’t mind. The grenache for this wine, grown on this vineyard, was planted in 1969; the carignan is from 1915 plantings.
