Winemaker Notes

The Riverland didn’t act in a typical fashion for the 2023 harvest. We took several trips to monitor the ripening of our Murtho portion of Grenache, picking later than we expected! Then only 9 days later we picked our Mataro and Grenache from Greenock (which would normally be around 3 weeks later). The Murtho Grenache was pressed on arrival at the winery for settling and fermentation on light lees. The Grenache and Mataro from Greenock were harvested together and pressed after several hours on skins to enhance colour and flavour development. Time on yeast lees for six weeks post fermentation helped develop a creamy, yet savoury mouthfeel.

Vibrant just ripe red berry fruits with musky tones ending with a crunch of vibrant acid and savoury, almost creamy undertones from lees contact post ferment

This is a classic blend of Grenache and Mataro from a combination of Ashmead family vineyards in Greenock and also Murtho in the Riverland. The Grenache steals the show showing aroma typicity with strawberry and sour cherry, alongside some juicier Ribena and jasmine notes from the muscly Mataro component. On the palate there is a watermelon kick with cranberry, ripe peach and some more delicate nuances of orange peel, honeysuckle and liquorice. It’s savoury, dry and refreshing!
