Production notes

Description

This is the 10th release of our GSM. The blend is one which falls naturally together coming from our Greenock Vineyard. Grenache, the base for this wine, has an ability to deliver sufficient power with an elegance and restraint on the palate which is quite unique. Shiraz offers plushness to the mid pal-ate and the savoury edge to the Mataro slots in seamlessly.

Estate grown from our Greenock Vineyard this blend comes from our Grenache planted in soils rich in ironstone with pockets of red clay and Mataro comes from the neighbouring block with a more west-erly aspect. Conditions can be tough out at Greenock, with very limited water and some very ex-posed sites. Compost combined with mulching is proving useful to build soil health and hence vine health. Our 2025 GSM also includes a little Carignan from Greenock and a small portion of Grenache from our Mengler Hill Vineyard, on the border of Eden Valley.

Winemaker Notes

Mataro from 2025 is the best we have ever seen it. Almost equal in proportion with Shiraz in our ’25 blend, the power and spice is delicious and a true sign of how Mataro can shine in a warm year. All varieties were fermented separately in open fermenters. MLF was carried out on light lees in sea-soned French oak before deciding on the final blend which we then allowed a few months in cement tulips to bring together the intense array of flavours whist maintaining that vibrancy and freshness we love in our GSM.

Reviews

94 points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

This Barossa blend includes 46% Grenache, 27% Shiraz, 26% Mataro and just 1% of Carignan. It is the 10th release of this wine. The fruit comes from their Greenock Vineyard, with the Mataro from a neighbouring block. A little portion of the Grenache does come from their Mengler Hill Vineyard. The vines providing the fruit date back more than fifty years in some cases. Maturation was in older French oak puncheons for seven months, as well as a concrete tulip. Dark magenta with a crimson rim, the nose reveals lovely and rather deep cherry aromas, along with florals, chocolate, tobacco leaves, raspberries and cassis. This is finely balanced with excellent length and zesty acidity throughout, finishing with sleek tannins. A cracker, which will surely provide pleasure over the next decade, longer if needed.

94 points, Ed Agg, The Cellar Post

Bright and vibrant, spicy and savoury on the nose. Peppery plums, blackberries, and dark plums, hints of clove, liquorice, dried herbs. The palate’s medium-full, juicy and bright with lovely tension and structure. Dark fruited in profile with balanced savoury nuance and fine firm tannins. Great acidity here. Super freshness. Very good drinking for $35.

This comes off estate-grown fruit from the Greenock Vineyard the Ashmeads bought some years ago. I really like the style. It's seamless, medium-bodied, and so vibrant and energetic. Aromas of bright red fruits with a typical spicy grenache influence. And then the palate delivers with its juicy red fruits and slightly light confectionery characters that are balanced with a spicy and faint earthiness. A thoroughly beautiful current-drinking style with some short-term cellaring potential.
