Production notes

Description

This wine is named after our maternal Grandfather, who helped Lorraine and Neil to start Elderton Wines. Gramps, as we called him, was a larger than life personality that always had an eye for a great opportunity. He loved fine wines, especially the big reds of the Barossa.

From our Greenock vineyard on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley, established by the Helbig family in 1915. This beautiful contoured block of Grenache was planted in 1969. Sandy loam over red clay with patches of ironstone throughout, the vines here are quite lean in terms of vigour and seem happy that we ask very little of them as we prune to low bud numbers. In recent years we have applied straw mulch under vine

Winemaker Notes

Vintage 2025 was the earliest on record for us at Elderton. With an exceptionally dry lead in to summer the vines shot ahead and we harvested almost a month earlier than last year, on the 22nd February. Grenache, with its inher-ent ability to self-regulate gave us a mild crop to work with. We fermented in a cement tulip, with 21% whole bunch. After 12 days on skins with a gentle cap management, the fruit was pressed and spent 11 months in seasoned large format French oak for malolactic fermentation and resting time.

Reviews

95 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

The 2025 Wellington Grenache is abundantly aromatic, with notes of rose petals and red fruit, star anise, licorice and pink peppercorn. In the mouth, the tannins provide a firm and drying scaffold but are balanced by the supporting, supple fruit. This is a very good wine, perfumed and attractive. The rose petal notes emerge once again through the long finish, which is lovely. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. The fruit is sourced from the Helbig family’s Greenock vineyard, which was established in 1915 on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley, but this contoured Grenache block was planted in 1969. The site comprises sandy loam over red clay, interspersed with patches of ironstone, contributing to naturally low vine vigor. The vines are pruned to low bud numbers and managed with minimal intervention. In recent years, straw mulch has been applied beneath the vines to moderate soil and root-zone temperatures while gradually adding organic matter and nutrients to the soil as it decomposes over time. The 2025 harvest was the earliest on record at Elderton, following an exceptionally dry growing season that accelerated vine development and brought harvest forward to the 22nd of February, almost a month earlier than the previous year. Grenache’s natural capacity for self-regulation resulted in a modest crop yield. Fermentation took place in a concrete tulip fermenter with 21% whole bunch inclusion. Following 12 days on skins with gentle cap management, the wine was pressed and matured for 11 months in seasoned large-format French oak.
