Christmas wines – what we’re drinking for Christmas

Allister Ashmead – wines for Christmas lunch

With an early summer and warmer temperatures expected for Christmas, I am hoping to drink the 2019 Western Ridge Grenache Carignan in the middle of the day. Happy to place it in the fridge to give it a mild chill, making it an utterly delicious beginning to some bigger reds through the day.

Elderton Golden Semillon, Barossa Valley Wineries

I also find Christmas day is the perfect day to reacquaint myself with our Golden Semillon. Perfect with Christmas pudding and makes me realise what a stunning drink this is when paired well. The 2020 vintage has just been released!

I also hope that Jules may bring a Campbells Merchant Prince Muscat for the pudding as well…

Cameron Ashmead – my wines for Christmas

December is a crazy month for the Ashmead family with five birthdays, as well with all of the normal parties. Luckily Jules is very organised: the tree is already up and most of the presents have been bought. I am looking forward to Christmas Day when we plan to play tennis and swim with the extended family.

Eden Valley Riesling

I will be looking forward to drinking the 2020 Eden Valley Riesling. Always a cracker of way to kick off Christmas morning with presents and SA oysters. It just eases you into the day and is perfect breakfast wine (if that is a thing!)

2017 Ode to Lorraine

I am also looking forward to having the 2017 Ode to Lorraine, or one of the older vintages, to complement the traditional Christmas meats, which Uncle Al and Auntie Bec have planned for us.

Jess Ruciack – Christmas beverages sorted!

Our Christmas trees are up (yes, plural trees), the kids have finished school/kindy and the festive season is nearly upon us! I am not at all close to being fully prepped for Christmas Day, but that’s how I roll every year, so I’m feeling ok. What I do have sorted already is my Christmas beverages!

I’ve got my 2018 Eden Valley Chardonnay to go with my Christmas day lunch – mains for me and my fellow vegetarians will be a roast pumpkin, caremelised onion, chargrilled capsicum, cherry tomatoes, feta and pine nut tart… with all the salads and trimmings that will also be on the table.

Elderton Barossa GSM wine bottle shot

And for Boxing Day in front of the cricket, with packets of salt and vinegar chips and a cheese plate, I’ve got the Barossa GSM. It’s young and fresh, and the bonus is you can chill it a bit if it’s going to be a scorcher of a day!

And what else I’ll be drinking for Christmas – can’t forget the red bubbles I’ve got ready for breakfast. I know it’s a sticking point that we don’t have any at Elderton, but there are some other great Barossa choices including Black Queen from Peter Lehmann and MC Sparkling Shiraz from Teusner.

Cheers!
