Finding the perfect wine for you
by Karli Currie
I will quite simply introduce this piece by saying the right place to start looking for the perfect wine for you is in the Barossa, or perhaps more precisely at Elderton Wines.
We are known for producing exceptional wines and have a range which suits a wide variety of palates and budgets, our cellar door team are sure to be able to help you find a wine you will love!
Yes, it is true that our two biggest wines are rich, delicious and amazingly special Barossa red wines (Command Shiraz and Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon), however at over $100 per bottle, these wines are not accessible for everyone, and certainly not on a regular basis…but then if you are like me you will find a way to justify a bottle or two, even if only for a special occasion.
Looking for something fresh and zesty? Try our Eden Valley Riesling, with minerally passionfruit and lemon blossom on the front palate and a beautiful balanced acidity this yummy wine is great with or without food (I like to drink it with chilli mussels).
Rosé, not normally your thing? Our Barossa Rosé is produced from a Mourvedre and Grenache blend. Crisp and dry this delicate Rosé will leave you wondering why you hadn’t tried it sooner, think guava and rose petal.
Haven’t tried a Chardonnay since they traditionally tasted like you were eating a piece of wood? Maybe our Eden Valley Chardonnay can convince you that it truly is a beautiful variety. Very lightly oaked the real tropical fruit flavours get to shine through, with a kick of body to allow the wine to linger on the palate.
Merlot anyone? Another variety that traditionally (particularly in Australia) is swayed away from our Barossa Merlot has delicious plum, spice and earthy tones that make it a magnificent food wine.
Sweet but balanced – sound like your thing? Our Barossa Golden Semillon allows you to enjoy something a little rich and sticky, without wanting to scrape it from the back of your throat. A natural acidity from the ‘cordon cut’ process of grape harvesting means this wine gives more than expected.
The perfect blend? The Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot fruit that goes into our Ode to Lorraine CSM are specially selected from our best blocks to make this wine shine. Rich, intense, full bodied and everything you want from an amazing Barossa red wine I have not met anyone who has been disappointed with this wine (my particular favourite).
Something a little different? Our Western Ridge Grenache Carignan from our Greenock vineyard (on the ‘Western Ridge’ of the Barossa). It is a stunningly pretty and textural wine showing strawberries and cream on the palate.
Old faithful? Barossa Shiraz is something that most people know, and love and ours is certainly a blockbuster. With plum, chocolate and berries on the palate, not over oaked but a delicious balance of everything Barossa – fruit, oak, acid and richness.
Whilst we have a couple of other Barossa beauties in our range I think this is a pretty good start, something for everyone. Pop in to our cellar door if you get a chance to find your favourite or look out for any Elderton wines next time you are looking at a wine list or in a wine shop.
Cheers
