At Elderton Wines, our story has always been deeply rooted in the soil, history, and community of the Barossa Valley. While we honor the generations of knowledge that came before us, we are equally passionate about investing in the voices, minds, and talents of tomorrow.

That is why we are incredibly proud to celebrate Ben Townsend, the 2026 recipient of the Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship, on successfully completing his immersive, hands-on vintage placement at our Barossa winery.

Stepping straight out of the lecture theatre at the University of Adelaide—where he is studying a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology—and onto a fast-paced cellar floor, Ben proved exactly why this scholarship is so vital for the sustainability of our wine region.

What is the Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship?

The journey from learning winemaking theory to executing it amidst the controlled chaos of vintage is a massive leap. Established in 2015, the Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship was created to bridge that exact gap.

In a unique, long-standing partnership with Foundation Barossa, this program is designed to provide local, passionate students with a holistic pathway into the wine industry. The scholarship isn't just an award on a resume; it is an active, multi-layered support system that combines:

  • Financial Assistance: Helping students navigate the costs of tertiary viticulture and oenology degrees.

  • Structured Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from seasoned industry professionals who share generations of Barossa knowledge, character, and regional history.

  • Hands-on Vintage Placement: An intensive, real-world immersion during the busiest and most critical time of the winemaking calendar.

"Giving back to the community in which Elderton operates while sharing the Barossa’s story remains a priority for our family and our company," says Cameron Ashmead, Co-Managing Director of Elderton Wines. "Supporting emerging young people helps ensure that excellence and leadership continue well into the future."

From Grape to Glass: Ben’s 2026 Vintage Experience

During his placement this season, Ben became an integral part of our cellar crew. He wasn't just observing from the sidelines; he threw himself into every physical and sensory aspect of the vintage. From the moment high-quality fruit arrived, through the delicate processes of fermentation, to critical barrel operations and complex additions, Ben experienced the workflow end-to-end.

For Ben, the most valuable takeaway was discovering how interconnected the entire ecosystem is.

A Holistic View of Winemaking

In the wine industry, a great winemaker must also understand place. Ben’s time at Elderton reinforced the crucial relationship between the vineyard and the final bottle:

"One of the biggest learnings I will take forward is the connection between vineyard decisions and winery outcomes," Ben shared. "Working at Elderton reinforced how fruit quality, maturity, and site expression all influence winemaking decisions. In my future career, I want to think more holistically about how viticulture and winemaking work together to produce the best possible wine."

Beyond the technical skills—like mastering forklift operations and wine additions—the mentorship Ben received allowed him to ask questions, build confidence, and learn how sensory observations directly dictate crucial winemaking choices.

Why Investing in the Next Generation Matters

The Barossa Valley is world-renowned because it was built on a foundation of innovation, passion, and shared knowledge. However, safeguarding the future of our region requires actively opening doors for young, local talent to build meaningful careers right here at home.

Annabelle Travaglione, Chief Executive Officer of Foundation Barossa, notes that creating these local career pathways ensures that the excellence the Barossa is known for will thrive for decades to come.

Ben’s drive, work ethic, and passion are proof that the future of Barossa wine is in exceptionally good hands. We want to extend a massive thank you to Ben for his incredible hard work this vintage, and to Foundation Barossa for their continued partnership in making this scholarship possible.

We can’t wait to watch where Ben’s winemaking journey takes him next! 🍷
