Production notes

Description

The Eden Valley sub-appellation of the Barossa presents a striking contrast to the Barossa Valley floor, characterised by its cooler, wetter climate and skeletal, mineral-rich soils. These unique conditions are pivotal in cultivating some of Australia’s, and indeed the world’s, finest Riesling.

While our Riesling has traditionally been sourced from our Craneford vineyard in Eden Valley, the acquisition of a remarkable vineyard on Mengler Hill in 2023 adds depth to our portfolio, as this site boasts Riesling vines planted in the 1940s.

For our 2025 Eden Valley Riesling, we are blending the vibrant character of our Craneford vineyard with the austere depth and remarkable drive from our new Mengler Hill site. This blend promises to deliver a unique and compelling expression of Eden Valley Riesling.

Winemaker Notes

Pressure was on for Vintage 2025 as we experienced a dried than average winter and then a very dry growing season. Whilst we were lucky not to experience overwhelming heat spikes, the coupled with plenty of sunshine meant for an early and compressed vintage. With measured irrigation we managed to keep decent canopy on our Riesling and targeted our picking time to ensure we still retained decent acidity whilst achieving some delicious and unmistakably Een Valley florals in the juice.

Our Craneford vineyard is machined picked in the cool early hours of the morning. Mengler fruit is hand picked, in the morning, generally in the fog which helps to keep the temperature down for the duration of the pick.

A we build our knowledge of Mengler Hill, we continue to ferment the parcels separately to gain valuable insights into expression of site through fermentation and beyond. The resulting blend of the two parcels demonstrates how Mengler fruit enhances our Estate Riesling, adding to the fragrance of our Craneford vineyard while giving the wine a more serious edge and layers of complexity. Both parcels are fermented clean in stainless steel and held on lees for a short time before clarification for bottling, ensuring the wines retain purity and freshness.

95 points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

A most impressive Eden Valley Riesling from what is turning out to be a more impressive vintage than some may have felt was destined in the early stages. We tend not to think of Elderton for Riesling, but they have been remarkably successful with it over the years, and deserve far more attention. For 2025, the fruit is a blend of their traditional Craneford Vineyard in Eden Valley, as well as from their new vineyard at Mengler Hill, which has Riesling vines dating back to the 1940s. A lemon/green hue, this is a fresh, pristine and youthful Riesling with notes of citrus, florals, lemons and grapefruit. Taut in structure and finely balanced, there is excellent crunchy acidity running the length. So much to like here. No reason this won't be providing pleasure in fifteen years. 94 Points.

94 Points - Ed Agg, The Cellar Post

Limes, lime pith, white florals, subtle hints of crushed rock. Regionally on point. Lovely texture and weight on the palate, fresh limes, steely zing, vibrant and persistent on the finish. Very nice.

This very dry winter and growing season presented some challenges. But in the end, careful vineyard management ensured that the wines from the Eden Valley presented well. This has that spicy and slightly chalky character you might expect from the Eden Valley, with florals and a sort of limey character adding to its complex aromatics. The crunchy palate is dominated by a limey grapefruit influence and that fine pebbly minerality. It's a wine of some tension and tightness, which is, of course, Eden Valley, but it will continue to evolve with reasonable cellaring time.
