2025 Eden Valley Riesling

Production notes

Description

The Eden Valley sub-appellation of the Barossa presents a striking contrast to the Barossa Valley floor, characterised by its cooler, wetter climate and skeletal, mineral-rich soils. These unique conditions are pivotal in cultivating some of Australia’s, and indeed the world’s, finest Riesling.

While our Riesling has traditionally been sourced from our Craneford vineyard in Eden Valley, the acquisition of a remarkable vineyard on Mengler Hill in 2023 adds depth to our portfolio, as this site boasts Riesling vines planted in the 1940s.

For our 2025 Eden Valley Riesling, we are blending the vibrant character of our Craneford vineyard with the austere depth and remarkable drive from our new Mengler Hill site. This blend promises to deliver a unique and compelling expression of Eden Valley Riesling.

93 points (Special Value), Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Pale straw with a flash of green and bright aromas of freshly squeezed lime, grapefruit and green apple with a touch of Bickford's lime cordial. Hints of almond blossom, crushed rock, lime zest, fennel, lemongrass and some lemon curd. Tight and flavoursome with bright lime and grapefruit tones, just a touch of pithy texture and a brisk mineral line, finishing dry and lipsmacking.

This very dry winter and growing season presented some challenges. But in the end, careful vineyard management ensured that the wines from the Eden Valley presented well. This has that spicy and slightly chalky character you might expect from the Eden Valley, with florals and a sort of limey character adding to its complex aromatics. The crunchy palate is dominated by a limey grapefruit influence and that fine pebbly minerality. It's a wine of some tension and tightness, which is, of course, Eden Valley, but it will continue to evolve with reasonable cellaring time.

95 points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

A most impressive Eden Valley Riesling from what is turning out to be a more impressive vintage than some may have felt was destined in the early stages. We tend not to think of Elderton for Riesling, but they have been remarkably successful with it over the years, and deserve far more attention. For 2025, the fruit is a blend of their traditional Craneford Vineyard in Eden Valley, as well as from their new vineyard at Mengler Hill, which has Riesling vines dating back to the 1940s. A lemon/green hue, this is a fresh, pristine and youthful Riesling with notes of citrus, florals, lemons and grapefruit. Taut in structure and finely balanced, there is excellent crunchy acidity running the length. So much to like here. No reason this won't be providing pleasure in fifteen years. 94 Points.
