Production notes

Description

The Ashmead family of Elderton Wines is extremely passionate about producing exemplary Riesling from Eden Valley. Our commitment to making dry Riesling has now lasted over 27 years and we be-lieve it is the standout white grape from our appellation.

Whilst Elderton has typically been recognised for our robust red varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet, our Eden Valley Riesling has, in itself, built an enviable reputation. The 2007 vintage won the trophy for the ‘Best Current Vintage Riesling’ at the 2007 International Riesling Challenge, with the 2008 vintage following up with a gold medal and trophy for ‘Best Dry White Varietal’ at the 2008 Perth Royal Wine Show. The 2010 vintage was named in the top 5 in the 2010 Winestate Wine of the Year and the 2012 vintage won a gold medal at the 2012 International Riesling Challenge.

Winemaker Notes

The lead into the growing season for 2026 was dry. Late and low winter rains left us reliant on irrigation from a relatively early stage. We see this requirement more at Mengler Hill as this vineyard starts the growing season earlier than Craneford. However, the rains did arrive in late February. We were warned however with such little rain typically coming at this time of year, this rain event did catch us by surprise! In fact, we think the rain helped to spur our vines along, allowing the crop to develop
another level of flavour definition which we see in the wine. Careful vineyard management with
plenty of airflow helped to ensure disease risk was confined to a few hot spots. Mengler was
handpicked and Craneford by machine first up in the coolth of the morning.
In 2026 due to small volumes and now understanding how well the two vineyard sites can work
together, we blended together the Mengler and Craneford parcels and fermented as one.
The new wine was left on lees to retain freshness avoiding any risk of oxidation and stabilised just prior to bottling.
