2023 will be remembered as a long and slow vintage. We had very mild weather and hints of rain which meant patience was required to ensure we achieved full ripeness. Mataro is a true star of 2023 vintage, all spice and red fruits with a serious tannin line.
Hand harvested old vine grenache, with a small whole bunch portion, was fermented in a concrete tulip allowing for greater flavour extraction. A slow, steady fermentation built the tannin profile. The mataro was fermented in cement open fermenters. Both parcels were rested in seasoned French oak for malolactic fermentation and further time on lees. The final blend also has a touch of carignan and shiraz.
