Museum wines – an update from our recent Retrospective tasting

by Allister Ashmead

We recently opened some museum wines from our cellar and were interested to see where these wines are in their evolution. Today we are sharing our tasting notes about the museum wines we opened.

If you love museum wines, our Retrospective Series tastings at our Barossa Cellar Door look at museum wines from the Estate and Exceptional Sites Ranges all the way to our flagships Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon and Command Shiraz. We invite you to join us for one of the upcoming tasting experiences where we will open six back vintage wines from across our range – all the details are at the bottom of this post.

Museum wine tasting notes

1990 Barossa Shiraz

A Great Bottle. Brick red, almost Barolo like in colour and aromas. Still rounded, with soft and ever so delicious fine tannin. Opened up superbly well and held in the glass for over 2 hours. One of the real hits of the day. Obviously a drink soonish proposition.

Our recommendation – drink now

1999 Command Shiraz

A big, dense and muscular Barossa Shiraz that would put a huge smile on the face of lovers of older wine. Showing great integration the wine is absolutely complete with nice charry notes from the new barrels they rested in all those years ago.

Our recommendation – drink now

2000 Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon

An utterly remarkable wine especially given the challenges of the season! Has retained wonderful colour with dark hues. Silky smooth and still so vibrant. Impeccably structured with delicious fine tannins. Wine of the day for many. Will drink well for the foreseeable future. A Classic.

Our recommendation – drink now or in the next couple of years

2010 Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz

Such a delight. Showing real brightness on the nose, and harmony on the palate. Not a big wine, but oh so complete with smoky and meaty notes giving the wine some elegance and structure. If you have this in the cellar, look to drink over the next 5 years.

Our recommendation – drink now or in the next 5 years

2015 Fifteen Shiraz

A monster of a wine, that is still just starting to evolve. It is a big sweet fruited wine, which has integrated smartly with the mocha like French oak. Still embryonic in development, the alcohol is showing a bit, but the wine could have been served closer to cellar temperature and would not have been noticed.

Our recommendation – drink over the next 10-15 years. This wine will benefit from further aging.
