2021 Helbig 1915 Shiraz
Elite Single Vineyards
Back to AllOnly 691 bottles produced
A single vineyard selection of truly remarkable Shiraz that was planted by the Helbig family in 1915. This vineyard is located on the western ridge of the famous Barossa Valley and has been a highly sought after parcel for many of the Barossa’s leading winemakers. Luckily for the Ashmead family, we were able to acquire this vineyard in 2010, forever ending the race to get this amazing fruit.
Winemakers Comments | After some tricky vintages with heat and frost in 2019 and 2020, the spring leading into 2021 came with ample rainfall and relatively normal conditions. Our cane pruned Helbig is watched carefully and thinned as required once fruit has set. We rarely need extra water to keep this patch going, owing to the deep roots in sandy loam over red clay. Harvest decisions in 2021 were easy, with no threat of rain or any disease pressure. The pristine fruit was hand-picked in the morning. Destemmed fruit was cold soaked and fermented in new oak puncheons with heads knocked out over 2 weeks before pressing to oak for malolactic fermentation and extended time on lees. We find the lees help the wine to integrate with such bold tannins. This process also helps to blend the new oak in with the bold fruit profile. We are super excited about our 2021 Helbig - it is the result of a stunning vintage. Happy and healthy vines in perfect growing conditions deliver wine of this calibre only in the very best vintages, making our job as grapegrowers and winemakers easy! - Jules Ashmead & Brock Harrison |

This is a more recent addition to the Elderton stable. It captures the power and opulence of the Greenock vineyard. This is power plus with the deep black plummy fruit laced with a fine minerality and chalkiness that balances it. There’s a trace of licorice and clove that adds further complexity to a massively intense palate. Having said all that, it still manages to retain a certain elegance and refinement. It’s a very small production wine but worth the hunt to find it.

he 2021 Helbig 1915 Shiraz is a very big wine, in packaging, flavor density and length through the finish. The cool and long 2021 season has meant that leaving fruit on the vine was a cinch for producers chasing full flavor and a certain style, and that is evident both in the finish of this wine here (rich, super ripe, leading with figs, dates, rum and raisin/sultana vibe, a hint of poached plum and roast beef juices) and the eventual alcohol—15.8% on the label. The front of the palate and the aromas are excellent, dripping in mulberry, blood plum, raspberry, aniseed and dark chocolate. I find the finish to reveal an unbalanced ledger of ripeness, which detracts from the fresh/saturated feelings of the front palate. Many will disagree with me, and that is ok. The tannins are a highlight here, I think we can all agree on that: chewy, pliable, savory and shapely.

From a vineyard planted in 1915, this opulent 2021 Shiraz Helbig 1915 impresses thanks to a freight train of dark berry aromas - blackberry, fruit pastilles and cocoa are packed tightly with deep-set oak. Super punchy, slightly firm acidity underlines the bright palate. The whole package is compact and built for the long haul.
