*special release *

Elderton has a long standing and proud history of making world class Shiraz. It brings our family much pleasure to release this celebratory wine from our 40th vintage.

This parcel of fruit, from our oldest vines, is generally blended back into our estate range Barossa Shiraz. However, with harvest conditions considered perfect in 2021, it was deemed this parcel (which is ever so close in quality to Command Shiraz) was the perfect way to mark the occasion of our 40th vintage.

Winemakers Comments

This release, the second under the Ashmead Family Reserve title, is a ripping expression of the power of fruit our beautiful Ancestor vines produce here in Nuriootpa. From a dream vintage, this parcel of fruit was just simply too good not to feature in its own wine. Hand-picked, the destemmed fruit spent 10 days on skins in a wax-lined concrete open fermenter, before pressing to oak for malolactic fermentation and then barrel maturation for 18 months in 100% new American oak puncheons. This wine is the result of meticulous barrel selection to ensure the final blend has power of flavour coupled with the right balance to create this special release. - Jules and Brock

94+ points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Well, it’s a Command performance of traditional Barossa Shiraz, if you get my drift. Black fruit with a pastille-like intensity, quite perfumed and bright, with plenty of toasted coconut oak, sizzled sage, dill, and dark spice. It’s full-bodied, rippling with tannin and chewy grip, still tastes fresh and lively, even though its a wine of heft with the volume turned up to eleven. The finish is bold and savoury, laden with oak and blue/black fruit. It’s very primary and elemental as at now. It’ll be nectar to lovers of this style in the years to come. Or even now, if you enjoy a good walloping.

94 points - Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot

Ancestor Vines on show here as the wine delivers not only raw power but also exceptional shape and purity of fruit. There is an impressive intensity of dark cherry, fruit pastilles and sweet new oak aromas upfront that are supported by savoury cedar and earth. Then a compact core of flavour to follow that is beautifully formed and even, a line of chewy tannins and lick of acidity well integrated in a long, sustained, although at this young age, slightly oaky finish.
