2014 Barossa Shiraz
Estate Family VineyardsBack to All
The fruit for this Shiraz is sourced mainly from the Elderton Vineyard situated on the banks of the North Para River, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley, South Australia. Elderton was transformed from a vineyard supplying quality fruit to other wineries to a winery in its own right in 1982, and have since won much recognition for all of the wines, especially the Shiraz. Barossa Shiraz is now highly collectable worldwide, and the Elderton is always a benchmark for the region.
There are many blocks of Shiraz on the three Elderton estate vineyards, some as old as 100 years. Some of the best parcels from each of these single sites (Nuriootpa, Greenock and Craneford) are blended to create what one can only describe as ‘the perfect Barossa Shiraz’. The grapes, which are lovingly tended to by Peter Wild and his team, are mainly harvested at an optimum maturity of about 14 – 15 Baume.

This would blow your hair back. It offers a whoosh of syrupy soft flavour. It’s all plums and cloves and smoky oat; twist the top and the scents and flavours are at you at a rate of knots, as if they have please to sell and the faster the deal is sealed, the better. It will cellar, but there’s no need to.
Wine of the Week - Winsor Dobbin, 22 October 2016
A knockout Barossa shiraz from one of the most reliable producers in the region; the Ashmead family at Elderton. Estate-grown and made, this a classic rich and warm style partially made from fruit grown on vines that are well over 100 years of age. This is big and bold, a real prop forward of a wine, but with some clever ball-handling skills. It's a blend of fruit from Nuriootpa, Greenock and Craneford from what proved to be an outstanding vintage. I enjoyed the fruit intensity with dark berry and currant flavours allied to chocolate and vanilla/oak characters. Despite its 14.5% alcohol, it is drinking well now, but experience suggests that Elderton shirazes can cellar for a couple of decades.

It offers a whoosh of syrupy soft flavour. It’s all plums, redcurrant, cloves and smoky/creamy oak; twist the top and the scents and flavours are at you at a rate of knots, like they have pleasure to sell and the faster the deal is sealed, the better. It will cellar, but there’s no need to. It’s Barossa shiraz in fun-and-frisky mode, though with the requisite depth to satisfy.
