2021 Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon
Elite Single Vineyards
Back to AllThe 2021 is the twenty first release of this this delicious Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
It may be just a tiny little parcel of Cabernet planted in the 1940s, however what a powerful little flavour packed expression it is! The Ashmead block has consistently produced small parcels of excellent quality fruit for several years. The block was almost destroyed in 1997 to make way for higher yielding vines, however the family made the decision to promote the vineyard to a higher destiny – thus the Ashmead.
Winemakers Comments | 2021 was a winemakers dream vintage! Coming after some hot and dry vintages we were able harvest our Ashmead when we decided, without the threat of rain or changing weather patterns. The 2021 was handpicked and destemmed to an open fermenter. We employed very gentle cap management given the small volume we have to work, with along with the strong tannin profile and small berries of the old vine Cabernet. The new wine was pressed to a selection of new and seasoned French oak which we chose to compliment and support the intense flavours of the Ashmead without adding too much oak impact. - Jules Ashmead & Brock Harrison |

The 2021 Ashmead, a beautiful single vineyard Barossa Cabernet, radiates with strong blackcurrant fruits enhanced by touches of cedar and eucalyptus, all with superb purity and focus. Beautifully proportioned, it delivers vibrant sweet fruits underpinned by firm, mouth-coating tannins. All bound up tight now, so it definitely needs time to blossom.

Estate-grown cabernet sauvignon from Elderton’s 79-year-old vineyards in Nuriootpa; matured for 18 months in French oak puncheons and hogsheads. Deep crimson in colour with nary a whiff of herbaceousness, just a solid wave of blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit cut with baking spices, licorice, cassis, earth and cedar. Full-bodied with an impressive balance of fruit power and grace, finishing long and black-fruited with abundant spice and charm.

Sweet and compact on entry. Blackcurrant, graphite and a tinge of sappy licorice root and spearmint at the edges. Yet this is fully ripe, succulent, amply weighted and built to please now, as much as it will age with grace. Lovely drinking.
